OUR PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

Here at JPMF, we appreciate that each individual has unique and diverse needs and experiences. Peer supporters utilize learning from their own recovery experiences to support you in navigating your own journey. While each peer support relationship will be unique to the individual, all peer support sessions are led by the peer. It is essentially up to the peer receiving services to determine how these sessions look and what is discussed during them. It is the role of the peer supporter to remain “wellness focused” and to provide their peers with a sense of personal empowerment during these conversations.

To us, peer support represents:

Validation & Comfort

Authenticity & Acceptance

Encouragement & Active interest

A major difference between peer support and a counselling relationship is the shared experiences between the supporter and the peer. Self-disclosure is often crucial in the development of an effective peer relationship while the focus within a counselling relationship will remain on the client - addressing their experiences, providing a supportive environment, protecting confidentiality, implementing interventions, and developing goals.
